Why Pilates?

Pilates is Transformative

Pilates is transformative; teaching you an awareness of your body and how to control your body through movement initiated from the core to the limbs that helps you become stronger, more flexible and more balanced. The focus is on all of the muscles, not just the major most visible muscles, leading to a transformation of the body. Pilates develops the deep muscles of the back and abdomen to support your spine and focuses on breathing to promote better posture. Pilates strengthens the body and quiets the mind. It is great exercise for men and women of any age or fitness level.

What is Pilates?

Pi·la·tes \ pə-ˈlä-tēz

Pilates, at the most fundamental level, is a series of specific exercises executed on a mat or on specialized Pilates equipment.  The exercises have a specific sequence, breath, and flow.  There are many exercises performed on the mat and on the equipment recognized as “Classical Pilates”.  Joseph Pilates had many disciples, or master students, who in his tradition went on to evolve his original exercises over time leading to “Contemporary Pilates”.  Both Classical and Contemporary Pilates share the goal of developing deep stabilizing core strength in the abdominals and the backline of the body which in turn supports the spine and stabilizes the pelvis. Concentration, breath, mind-body awareness, and proper alignment are central to all Pilates exercises.

Are Pilates and Yoga the Same?

Pilates is not the same as yoga. They are very different disciplines that can highly complement one another. Both can be transformational for the body and mind.

Yoga is a holistic discipline originating from ancient India with a greater emphasis on the spiritual and exercises are primarily executed on the mat.

Pilates originated from German-born Joseph Pilates in the 20th century and is more physically focused with targeted exercises on the mat and resistance-based equipment such as the Reformer to improve strength, flexibility, and control of the body. Pilates is often considered more beneficial to those rehabilitating or recovering from injuries.

The focus and concentration required in both practices keep you anchored in the moment and out of the distractions of the day helping to create space in the mind.
